Rutherfordium (Rf). Diagram of the nuclear composition, electron configuration, and valence (outer electron) orbitals of an atom of rutherfordium-267

Rutherfordium (Rf). Diagram of the nuclear composition, electron configuration, and valence (outer electron) orbitals of an atom of rutherfordium-267 (atomic number: 104), an isotope of this radioactive element. The nucleus consists of 104 protons (blue) and 163 neutrons (red). Named after Ernest Rutherford and first synthesised in 1968, it is a transactinide and transition metal in group 4, period 7, and the d-block of the periodic table. Rutherfordium-267, the longest-lived isotope of rutherfordium, has a half-life of around 5 hours.
