Tara is the supreme savior and goddess of mercy in Vajrayana Buddhism, best understood as a female counterpart to a bodhisattva. She is also consort to Avalokitesvara, the embodification of the mercy of all Buddhas. This graceful but somewhat exaggerated image of feminine virtues in the British Museum is crafted in gilt-bronze sculpture and dates from 7th-8th century CE in Sri Lanka.
