Commercial peat digging operation by Caithness Peat in the north of Scotland.
Caithness Peat is a small commercial peat-cutting business with consent to extract peat from several hundred acres of the Causewaymire south of Thurso. The business supplies local householders as well as a malting company who supply major distilleries. The company only holds a licence for extraction on a year-to-year basis and this is under threat because of a proposal to extend an adjacent wind farm over the area of peat working. RWE npower renewables have initially said that peat extraction would be incompatible with development of the site for wind power, however this is under review following local support for the peat company from Halkirk & District Community Council and the importance of the supply to the malting industry.
