Such ships as theNourmahal 2^\&Atalanta carry a completecrew with first and second mates, first andsecond engineers, double sets of oilers,stokers, deck hands, assistant cooks, numer-ous stewards, etc. etc. Some of thesevessels have been in commission all theyear round, and the annual expense ofkeeping them up must be quite serious. Such vessels as the Corsair and Strangerneed not cost much more than the vesselsof the third class mentioned above. Thecrew of my boat number seventeen alltold, and my consumption of coal is only$350 a month, though I use the boat every day, and the fires never go out except onSundays. The expense of running a steam yachtmay be kept within very reasonable bounds,or it may be increased indefinitely, accord-ing to the way in wliich it is done. Anyone entertaining largely will, of course,run up an important sum for
