Dr. Vaughan has beenmade Archbisliop of Westminster as the successor ofthe late Archbishop and Cardinal Manning. It seemsthat many of the friends and admirers of CardinalManning had desired and exjjected that Dr. Gilbertwould be thus distinguished. Dr. Vaughan, of Sal-ford, has shown much local interest in the welfare ofthe masses, and in his new i)ost he may rise to higherqualities of i)ublic leadership than are now thought.
