In cold andwet weather I have never found the addition of moisturein any form necessary or desirable. A guide to itsneed is found by judging of the air-space in the eggwhen testing on or about the 18th day (see plate ofeggs, page 49). If it is unduly large, moisture may berequired. Directions are given in the book sent outwith each machine. In this incubator the eggs need very little airing or. As there is no hot-water tank with its solid body ofheat to overcome, should the outer temperature rise, there is less danger of overheating, and I have foundfewer eggs with broken yolks than in any hot-waterincubator. The regulation of the heat, in this, as in the hot-water machine, is largely dependent on the managementof the lamp, which should only be turned high enough 76 THE POULTRY MANUAL to give sufficient heat. In either class of machine, hotwater or hot air, the damper should only be liftedabout Y^g inch when the proper heat is heat is not only wasteful but dangerous,as the raised damper does not let out all the heatbut only a portion of it. In hot weather, this type of incubator, like the ho
