Electrical experiment, early 20th-century artwork. The light bulb at centre is being lit by a high-voltage alternating current being produced by the apparatus on the table (which includes a Leyden jar and solenoid). The circuit is completed by the bodies of the two demonstrators. This shows that high voltages can be handled safely where the current supplied is low or there is no route for the current to discharge to the ground, which could cause electrocution.
