The only London statue of King George 1st tops the steeple of St George's Church in Bloomsbury Way. Weathered, its head bears a lightning conductor. George 1st was chosen by Queen Anne and Parliament to become King of Great Britain in order to bypass the closer relatives to Anne who were Roman Catholics. He came from Hanover and never learned to speak much English. The unusual steeple, designed by the renowned Nicholas Hawksmoor, was based on the Mausoleum of Halicarnassus, one of the seven wonders of the ancient world.
