Bouillon.—Grows usually in theform of fine grains at the bottom ofthe tube and adherent to the sides, the bouillon remaining clear or be-coming slightly clouded. The reac-tion of the media rapidly becomesacid, but changes to alkaline aftera variable length of time. Potato.—Growth not visible to the naked eye. Thebacillus grows, however, to a certain extent, and usually as-sumes very atypical and irregular forms (involution forms).Agar-agar and Gelatin.—The growth on these, media isslower and more feeble than upon blood-serum (Fig. 70).It presents nothing Fig. 70.— Bacillus diph-therias; agar-agar culture(photograph by Dr. HenryKoplik). PATHOGENIC BACTERIA AND EUNGI 307 Pathogenesis.—Subcutaneous inoculations of guinea-pigsare fatal in thirty-six to seventy-two hours in the case ofvirulent cultures. The lesions produced consist usually ofedema, hemorrhage, and fibrino-purulent exudation aboutthe point of inoculation in the subcutaneous tissue, hemor-rhagic enlargement of the lymphatic glands, congestion andedema of the lungs, hemorrhages into the suprarenal capsules, and less frequently necrosis of the liver and pleural examination of the lymph-glands shows markedfragmentation of the nuclei of the cells, giving rise tonumerous deeply staining globules of chromatin scatteredthroughout them. The bacilli are ordinarily found onlyabout the point of inoculation, but cultures from the variousorgans will sometimes sho
