An early 20th century photograph of an ocean liner under construction in the Harland & Wolff shipyard, formed in 1861 by Edward James Harland (1831–95) and Hamburg-born Gustav Wilhelm Wolff (1834–1913), who came to the UK at age 14. In 1858 Harland, then general manager, bought the small shipyard on Queen's Island from his employer Robert Hickson. Situated in Belfast, the capital and largest city of Northern Ireland, standing on the banks of the River Lagan on the east coast.
