Gastric plication surgery. Computer illustration of a human stomach undergoing gastric plication (left) and after the procedure (right). Gastric plication is a surgical procedure used to treat obesity by significantly reducing the volume of the stomach. It is a version of the more popular gastric sleeve or gastrectomy surgery where a sleeve is created by folding a portion of the stomach on itself and stitching it closed (left). Unlike the other two techniques, plication does not remove stomach tissue, thereby preserving the stomach's natural nutrient absorption capabilities. The procedure leads to a marked reduction in the functional volume of the stomach, accompanied by an altered physiological and physical response to food.
