From a medical treatise of the 1830's documenting the then rare condition of microcephally. Recent increases in the spread of the Zika Virus have been linked with an increased incidence of this neurodevelopmental condition - visible a the skull of a newborn failing to fully inflate in the cranial region. It was also first claimed that Homo florensis, (the apparently recently surviving fossil hominiid from the indonesian island of Flores) may have simply been a series of microcephallic homo sapiens individuals. This is generally disregarded as an explanation today. There can be many causes for this developmental disorder apart from disease including chromosomal abnormality and homozygous mutation.
