The Devon is one of the most ancient and purest of the Englishbreeds and takes its name from the county in which it is chieflybred — the north part of Devonshire — which has been the home ofa hardy, active race of red cattle from the earliest periods of reli-able history touching any of the English breeds of cattle. It isgenerally believed that, like the Galloway and the West Highlandersof Scotland, the Devon has been developed, without the aid of out-crosses, from the aboriginal race of cattle that was found uponthe island of Great Britain; and in many respects, especially inform, size, and muscular activity, there is a very striking similaritybetween the Devon and the Scotch breeds above mentioned. Theliterature of the breed is meager, and but little has been placedupon record touching the development of the breed or those whohave been prominent in its improvement that would be of interestto the general reader.
