The third edition of the Coast Survey's Boston Harbor chart was published in 1878. In general appearance, it resembled the first two editions. However, the number of landscape views in the third edition, has been reduced to three. Although the navigation aids were updated, the topographical information was not. For example, the filling of Back Bay, which would have been almost completed by this time, has not progressed any further than depicted on earlier editions. This copy of the chart was hand colored and bears several additional navigational notations, apparently made in 1895 by a pilot and previous owner, William S. , Massachusetts , Boston Harbor
