UNIJ-ERSITIES AND THEIR SONS 471 He received his early education at Newell Instituteand Western University in Pennsylvania, and wasgraduated from Princeton in the Class of the early years of his life he assisted hisfather in his business, the latter having large coalmining interests in Pennsylvania. In October 1887,he began the study of law with George W. (iuthrie,of Pittsburg, and was admitted to the AlleghenyCounty Bar, in 1889. From 1890 until 1894 heserved as First Assistant-District Attorney of Alle-gheny County, and during his term of office triedmany important cases, the most famous being the. H. L. GOEHRING Homestead Cases of the Carnegie Steel \\orks, in1892-1893, and the George M. Irwin blind pool case tried in 1894, which brought Mr. Goehringprominently before the public. He served for fouryears on the Examining Board of the AlleghenyCounty Bar, being the youngest man ever appointedto that position. He is now engaged in a generalpractice, and is assistant counsel for many corpora-tions and railroads. In politics, Mr. Goehring is aRepublican. Law School; entered firm office of Dillon & Swayne,1891, and upon dissolution of that firm became asso-ciated with office of the Hon. John F. Dillon, and isstill practising in New York City.
