One of the most imposing fortifications to be seen along Jersey's Five Mile Road in St Ouen's Bay is Kempt Tower, also known as Grosse Tower, St Ouen's No 2, and the New South Battery. The sole surviving Martello Tower on the Island. It was built between 1832 and 1834 (a date stone inscribed 1834 can be seen above the door,) from Jersey granite as a defence against French invasion and named after Sir James Kempt, one of Wellington's Generals at the Battle of Waterloo. Kempt Tower was a Visitor Centre for the Les Mielles conservation area from July 1985 to 2014. It is now is holiday accommodation which can be rented from Jersey Heritage.
