Henri Giffard (1825-1882), French engineer. Giffard was the inventor of the injector, a device to convert pressure into velocity. The initial applications for injectors were in steam engines and boilers. Giffard is also famous for his flight in a steam-powered airship that he designed. Giffard flew his airship from Paris to Trappes on 24 September 1852, covering a distance of 27 kilometres. He was awarded the Legion of Honour in 1863. Giffard committed suicide in 1882.
