Saw palmetto, a fan palm, is backlit by the sun at the Audubon Bird Sanctuary, June 17, 2021, in Dauphin Island, Alabama. Saw palmetto is endemic to the subtropical southeastern United States. The Audubon Bird Sanctuary, established in 1961, features 164 acres of woodland trails that meander through pines, magnolia trees, marshes, dunes, swamps, and beaches. Dauphin Island is classified as a “Globally Important Bird Area” or Global IBA by the American Bird Conservancy and is often the first land stop for migratory birds.
