Petrus Plancius, Dutch astronomer, cartographer and clergyman, c1870. Plancius (1552-1622) was one of the founders of the Dutch East India Company, for whom he produced over a hundred maps. In 1592 he produced a world map titled Nova et exacta Terrarum Tabula geographica et hydrographica. He also produced a celestial globe including new constellations in the Southern Hemisphere, using observations provided by early Dutch expeditions to Indonesia.
