A rule often used by track men tocalculate the distance between the points of frogsat crossovers is as follows: From the distancebetween the gauge lines of parallel tracks, sub-tract the gauge of the track, multiply the re-mainder by the number of the frog, and theresult will be the distance between the points ofthe frogs. Care should be taken to place cross-overs so that trains will run through the switchesas shown in Fig. 244 and not against the point ofthe switch; this reduces the liability of accidentsfrom derailment.
