Stems usually several dm high, loosely branched, hirsute and somewhat strigose; leaves oblanceolate, 1-3 cm long, 2-4 mm broad, rather firm, obtuse, hirsute with somewhat pustulate bases, upper ones little reduced; spikes soUtary or geminate, naked, 2-5 (7) cm long; corolla inconspicuous, mm broad; fruiting calyx ob- long-ovoid, 4-5 mm long, spreading, slightly a- symmetrical, evidently biseriate, lower-most be- coming 2-6 mm distant; pedicels about mm long; mature calyx-lobes linear-lanceolate, tips more or less connivent, the midrib hirsute and thickened, margins appressed hispid; nudets 4, heteromorphous, odd nudet next to the axial ca- lyx-lobe, slightly the largest, about mm long, ovate, acute, smooth or obscurely rugulose or sparsely tuberculate, somewhat persistent, stand- ing off slightly from the gynobase; consimilar nutlets oblong-ovoid, about mm long, decidu- ous, closely appressed to gynobase, smooth, back convex, sides rounded or obtuse, groove opened or closed and abruptly broadened below into a small triangular areola; gynobase narrow, reach- ing to about 73 height of consimilar nutlets; style exceeded by odd nutlet, equalling or a little shorter than consimilar nutlets. Dry, usually somewhat sandy or gravelly soil, mostly in the mountains. Wyoming, northern Colorado, and northeastern Utah. May-July. Fig. 25. Co., 10 miles north of Altonali, J. Brotherson 651 (BRY). C. pattersoni is rarely collected. It is also very closely related to C. kehetjana and C. ambigua and intergrades with both.
