Fish fossil. Rock containing a fossil of a Phareodus sp. fish (centre). Fossils appear as rock slowly forms around objects buried in mud. As the rock forms, the shape and anatomy of buried animals and plants can be preserved. This specimen measures 30 centimetres in length and dates from around 50 million years ago in the Eocene epoch. It was found in the Green River formation, USA.
