On one occasion, as re-lated by an actor in the scene, the czar challenged the boys to wrestle withhim, and it took twenty of them, from eighteen to twenty years of age, to bringhim to the ground. There lay the mighty colossus, fairly pinned down, andheld a prostrate prisoner, when the empress appeared a petitioner in his behalf,and, with the contents of a basket of bon-bons, redeemed the captive!
