The fortunate individuals whose pieces are thus approved, thenreceive the first degree, which is equivalent to that of our bachelor of arts;but the numbers are so considerably diminished at each fresh trial, that, onan average, it is reckoned that not more than ten arrive at this degree, outof every thousand who present themselves, in the first instance, at the hallof the district; but as the districts are very numerous, these tens amount tomany hundreds in every province.
