William Bond. There was formerly a chapelat Povington, in the parish; and another, dedicated toSt. Margaret, at North Egleston. Here was an alienpriory subordinate to the abbey of Bee, in Normandy,which, at the suppression, was given by Henry VI. toSt. Anthonys hospital, London; by Edward IV. toEton College, and afterwards to the Dean and Preben-daries of Westminster. Flowers-barrow, an ancientencampment, is situated in the parish; and a largemound, a little to the west of the church, has been latelyopened, and found to contain several skeletons, some ofthem in a very perfect state. The bold escarpment ofthe rocks which bound one side of the parish, is highlyinteresting to the geologist, abounding in organic re-mains. 408. Seal and Arms. TYNEMOUTH (St. Os-WIn), a parish, a newly-en-franchised borough, and thehead of a union, in the of Castle ward, of Northumber-land, 8| miles (E. N. E.)from Newcastle ; comprisingthe several townships of Chir-ton, Cullercoates, Monksea-ton, Murton, Preston, NorthShields, and Whitleyj andcontaining 27,249 inhabit-ants,of whom 11,S90 are in Tynemouth township. Thisplace derives its name from its situation at the mouth ofthe river Tyne; its fortress was by the Saxons calledPenbal Crag, or the head of the rampart on the a votive altar dedicated to
