Would you advise me to do this, and what change in the present piping would be neces- sary to get the required bottom and top heat, in this New England climate? The floor of the boiler room is six feet be- low the floor of the greenhouse. F. E. S. The present piping, if used for hot water, is not sufficient to maintain much more than 50 degrees in zero weather and would be quite inadequate for forcing lily of the valley. On the other hand, while the size and amount of pipe are better adapted for use with steam than with hot water, it will be considerable care to keep up the steam in so small a plant. If steam is to be used, the expansion tank should be re- moved, a safety valve and water gauge attached to the boiler, and air valves inserted near the lower end of each coil. To be used with steam, the coil should be at least two feet above the water level of the boiler. In case the required heat is to be obtained with hot water, the amount of radiation should be nearly doubled, using 2-inch pipe for the returns. If all of the pipes are under the benches they would gi^e about the correct pro- portion of bottom and top heat, but if it is found that the bottom heat is insufficient, it can be increased by partly enclosing the space beneath the benches.
