CORMERY. 227 of Alcuins letters, who was designated by Alcuinas his immediate successor, became abbat of after Wulfhard II. He built a stonechurch, the west front of which still stands in con-siderable part, with the eleventh-century Roman-esque tower, most of which still stands, applied toit, the east wall of the tower being the west frontof Fridugisus. Plate VI shows a capital whichhas recently been found, evidently of the time ofFridugisus. Considerable parts of the later Gothicwalls still stand. They are carefully tended byM. Octave Bobcau, the local correspondent of theMinister of Public Education, whose apartmentsare in the refectory of the abbey.
