By the name xerosis is understood a peculiar change of theconjunctival ep>ithelium in the vicinity of the cornea associatedwith fatty degeneration and horny transformation, the affected spotsbecoming covered with small fatty-looking scales, between which aspecial variety of bacillus, the so-called Baeillus xerosis, has alsobeen found. The change described always accompanies mropth- 404 THE EYE thalmus, a disease which consists in cicatricial shrinking of the con-junctiva, and obliteration of the superior and inferior conjunctival degeneration often occurs in the conjunctiva with formationof nodular or diffuse growths, the blood-vessels and connective-tissuefibrils being especially the seat of degeneration. Sometimes thesegrowths or a portion of them fail to give the reactions of amyloidsubstance, although corresponding to it in appearance. They seemthen to be composed of hyaline substance. \. Broadened and con-densed endoneurium; c, Finely fibrous narrow-meshed network on the site of thedestroyed nerve-fibres. (By Weigerts method of staining the latter appears darker thanthe endoneurium.) 2. Inflammation of the Cornea and Sclerotic.—Acute injlammationof the cornea, keratitis (Fig. 206), of which oculists distinguishvarious forms and which is sometimes circumscribed and sometimesmore diffuse, is certainly in the majority of cases, if not invariably, caused by bacteria, amongst which the pyococci play a prominentpart. Histologically it is characterised first by immigration ofleucocytes, mostly of the polynuclear variety, which are derivedchiefly from the hyperiemic vascular network of the conjunctivallimbus («), and collect more or less abundantly
