Beginning with Hal- loween and the southern demand for All Saints' day, stock shortened up with a suddenness that is surprising to everyone who has not seen the same thing happening every year since the oriental invasion of California in the carnation line. Business has picked up materially the last few days and, notwithstanding the fact that the weather has been all that could be desired, good stock is undoubtedly scarce. There has been no "unusual" weather this season, so far. The cool nights are hardening the rose stock, and everything points to a good supply of this popular flower after the rush of mums and dahlias, which has kept the retailers well supplied with showy and salable stock at a rea- sonable price. First-quality stock in orchids, valley, sweet peas, gardenias and other similar flowers is. always scarce at this time, the orchid men, in particular, looking for a good cattleya to come in between C. labiata and 0. Trianffi. Berried stock has been on the market extraordinarily early this year, the yellow-berried Crataegus Lelandii being in particularly good demand; C. pruinosa is also good, being easy to handle on account of its thornless wood; it is most attractive, with its grey-green foliage and bright red ber- ries. A little heather is in the market already, but the color and quality will improve later. Among the greens, good plumosus is still bringing satisfactory prices to the grower, and the "green men" who han- dle huckleberry, Oregon grape and simi- lar stock have no complaint.
