Vietnam/France: The Garnier Expedition - The French assault on Hai Duong, 1873. Illustration by Alexandre Ferdinandus (2 March 1850 - 8 November 1888), 1877. The Garnier Expedition was a French expedition sent to Tonkin between November 1873 and January 1874. Led by Lieutenant Francis Garnier, it had initially been a delegation sent to bring back the unruly French trader Jean Dupuis. But when Garnier arrived in Hanoi, he sided with Dupuis and captured Hanoi, subsequently launching an unsanctioned lightning military campaign that conquered most of the Tonkin region in a mere three weeks.
