Studio photography in America in the 1950s – a photographer concentrates hard and is pressing a bulb shutter release with his huge Graflex camera. The bulb (a detachable rubber pneumatic device on a wire connected to the camera) meant the operator could help avoid camera shake, plus holding down the bulb and keeping the lens open was very useful for long time exposures. Graflex was an American camera manufacturer. This image is from an old American Kodak amateur colour transparency – a vintage 1950s photograph.

The bulb (a detachable rubber pneumatic device on a wire connected to the camera) meant the operator could help avoid camera shake, plus holding down the bulb and keeping the lens open was very useful for long time exposures. Graflex was an American camera manufacturer. The company was founded as the Folmer and Schwing Manufacturing Company in New York City in 1887 by William F Folmer and William E Schwing as a metal working factory, manufacturing gas light fixtures, chandeliers, bicycles and eventually, cameras. In 1909, it was acquired by George Eastman. In 1926 Eastman Kodak divested itself of this part of its investments and a new company, the Folmer Graflex Corporation, (later Graflex Inc) was formed. Graflex was known for the quintessential press camera, the ‘Speed Graphic’, manufactured for over 60 years, which was used by most photojournalists in the first half of the 20th century. This image is from an old American Kodak amateur colour transparency. It will look slightly soft if used at too large a size – a vintage 1950s photograph.
