French tank. World War I-era French tank with camouflage markings being examined by soldiers and women. The first use of tanks in warfare was by the British Army on 15 September 1916. The French developed tanks at the same time, first using them in combat in April 1917. This is a Saint-Chamond tank, which was first deployed on 5 May 1917. However, the short track meant it often got stuck when trying to cross ditches. This photograph is from the Bain News Service, one of the USA's earliest news picture libraries.
