Skeletal muscle. Light micrograph of a section through skeletal muscle fibres. Muscle fibres are extremely long, cylindrical cells. The long shape can be seen where the fibres have been cut longitudinally (at left). Stripes (striations) can faintly be seen on these fibres. The striations are due to the arrangement of the contractile proteins. In cross section (upper right) the fibres appear rounded or irregularly shaped. The fibres contain numerous elongated nuclei (dark red dots). Skeletal muscle is attached to the skeleton and is responsible for moving the bones. It is under voluntary control. Stain and magnification unknown.
