When afterwards the English power replaced theSikh, the Afghan hatred towards the latter was at itsvery height; and as no steps were taken to avertthe tendency, we, as the successors of the Sikhs inthe rule of the country, came in for a full share ofthe same. As an Afghan gentleman of great influencehas said, The behaviour of the Sikhs had made itvery difficult for the English to win the regard andaffections of the Afghan population. A few years ofa steady course of kind treatment has certainly gainedfor us their respect, but the hatred of the mullahs,both inside and outside our borders, remains un-altered ; the former may veil and conceal their inwardfeelings, but the latter vaunt their dislike and enmityopenly, and preach their ghaza and jehad just asdevoutly as ever.
