Toxocariasis life cycle. Diagram showing the life cycle of the parasitic nematodes dog roundworm (Toxocara canis) and cat roundworm (T. cati), the causes of toxocariasis. Humans can become infected from contact with soil contaminated with eggs from dog or cat faeces. The eggs hatch in the intestines and migrate to organs including the liver, lungs, brains and eyes. Most infections are asymptomatic, but in young children can display symptoms including fever, cough, weight loss and vomiting.
