The Big Bear Solar Observatory at Big Bear Lake, California, USA
The Big Bear Solar Observatory (BBSO) is operated by the New Jersey Institute of Technology with federal funding. It is the largest telescope of it's kind (as of June 2009) in the world with a meter clear aperture. The (just shy of six feet) primary mirror was polished by the world-renowned Steward Observatory Mirror Laboratory at the University of Arizona (UA). The new telescope will be used in joint observation campaigns with NASA satellites to optimize the scientific output of all observations of the Sun. It became operational in May of 2009, but requires about 3 more years to become fully operational. It is situated on an island off the shore of Big Bear Lake, at an elevation of about 7,500 feet above sea level.
