In 1832, he returned East andengaged in the mercantile business,first, in St. Johnsbury, Center, 1837, he moved is business to EastSt. Johnsbury. He retired from themercantile business about 1860, anddevoted hLs time to looking after hislarge land interests, financial invest-ments and- recreation, retaining hishome in East St. Johnsbury until M ^^ ii. He steadily failed, and in July he was prevailedupon by his son. Dr. F. W. Goodall, to go to his home where he remaineduntil his death. He served for some years as captain of the Vermont Statemilitia. He was at first a Whig in politics, and later a Democrat; was postmasterat East St. Johnsbury many consecutive years, without regard to changes inthe political administration. He was twice married: first, to Adeline H. Page, who died March 7, children were born to them: Leon, born, April 17, 1835, accumulated alarge property and died February 7, 1871, at his fathers home; Frank West,born Ajiril 5, 1837, now a physician in Bennington, Vt. He was married thesecond time, May 25, 1839, to Mary E. McGregor, who died in 1873. Twochildren were born to them: G
