The new Lincoln Cathedral visitor centre part of a £16 million pound project to improve the Cathedral setting and visitor experience. Lincoln Cathedral Connected is a £16 million project to radically improve the Cathedral’s setting and visitor experience. In early 2017 the project was awarded an HLF Round 2 pass and is anticipated to start on site in 2018. Simpson & Brown are responsible for the new Visitor Centre facilities located on the site of the former 19th century Deanery attached to the Cloisters on the north side of the Cathedral. The Deanery building itself will be converted to provide a large refectory, education centre, community rooms and offices. A new link building will connect the Deanery to the Cloister and accommodate a new shop and exhibition hall. The hall will display the twelfth century Romanesque Frieze, relocated from the Cathedral’s West Front in order to protect it from further deterioration. The designation of the site as both Grade I listed and a Scheduled Ancient Monument has resulted in the need for ongoing consultation with English Heritage, The Cathedrals Fabric Commission for England, Lincoln City Council and a numerous stakeholder bodies in order to ensure that this ambitious project successfully meets the requirements of the brief whilst minimising the impact on this site of international significance. The main challenge has been to design a building of quality and stature in its own right, and of its own time, within the actual and metaphorical shadow of the adjacent Cathedral Connected is a high profile, multi-million-pound transformational project which will bring economic and social benefits to the Cathedral, as well as the city of Lincoln. The Connected project is a scheme to radically improve the Cathedral’s setting and visitor experience – offering more engaging and dynamic spaces for a wider number of visitors to enjoy.
