Arecibo Observatory, GeoEye-1 satellite image. North is at top. This radio telescope is the world's largest-ever single-aperture telescope. Located in the jungles of the Caribbean island of Puerto Rico, it was constructed inside the depression left by a sinkhole, and was completed in 1963. The dish is over 300 metres in diameter and 50 metres deep, with a collecting area of 73,000 square metres. Image data obtained on 29 June 2009. The US-operated GeoEye-1 satellite was launched in September 2008, and orbits at a height of 680 kilometres. It is the world's highest resolution commercial Earth-imaging satellite.
