Dermatophyte fungus. Cultured colony of the dermatophyte fungus, Epidermophyton floccosum. The fungal mycelium consists of thread-like structures called hyphae, which have spread out from the centre through the nutrient medium. This fungus causes superficial infections of the skin and nails, and is one of several species responsible for ringworm, dhobie itch and athlete's foot.
