United Kingdom /London / Best of British/James Smith & Sons/ Makers of umbrellas and walking sticks/James Smith founded the umbrella maker James Smith & Sons in 1830 in Foubert’s place, off Regent Street, where umbrellas were made in the workshop at the back of the shop. His son, also called James Smith, continued the business and opened a second shop in New Oxford Street in 1857. In the 1900s, his daughter and two of his sons moved to Tasmania to run a farm. His daughter’s son then moved to England in 1930 to take over the running of the family business. The original shop moved to New Burlington Street, but was later destroyed in a bombing raid during World War II, though the New Oxford Street branch remains, and retains its Victorian frontage.
