It begins with theever new story, with which our readers are fami-liar, as to the Clay Street Hill road, San Francisco, being the first cable railway in the world. Whatis most worth noting in this book is the statementthat in 1880 there were but sixteen miles of cablein operation altogether. In 1884 there were 34miles of cable roads in the United States, andone very short one in London, England. At thepresent time there are nearly 200 miles of cableroads in the United States alone, with a prospectof an additional 100 miles before next heads the list with 50 miles, San Fran-cisco follows close afterwith 37 miles, and KansasCity has 32 Tiir, Gull. It will no doubt be interesting, for all interestedin cable railways, to know some particulars of thecable lines engineered by Mr. Clift Wise. Gillham was the first chief engineer ofthe Kansas City Cable railway; he built the firsttwo miles, and to him is due the credit for therapid development of cable railways through-out the West. Mr. Clift Wise succeeded in Au-gust, 18S5, and engineered the balance of theroad; and the way the extensive lines of the sys-tem are working is a great credit to him. In his■ ibleography Mr. Wise says : On the 24th day of June, 1885, the KansasCity Cable company ran the first cable train inKansas City over the first division of its road thencompleted, and marked the dawn of a new era inthe history of Kansas City.
