No To Bac, Smoking Substitute, 1895


This No-To-Bac advertisement went feminine in its efforts to persuade men to buy their gum as an aid in their fight to resist the lures of tobacco. Sterling Remedy Company, Chicago, Illinois, circa 1895. No-To-Bac contained licorice, gentian violet, guaiac, and ammonium chloride salt in a chewing gum base designed to substitute for the act of smoking cigarettes, pipes, and cigars.
