A stell of small diameter, such as 7 yards, dividing a mass of drift, the current of air imme- diately over the stell is suddenly cut in two, but to so small a hight that the snow from the air above falls between them into the stell. When, on the other hand, a stell of large diameter, as of 18 yards, divides a column of air, this is so much deflected on each side that the current above the stell is widely divided to a considerable hight, and, long before it regains its former state, it hag passed over the stell. where it deposits its snow; and hence, near such a stell the snow \s found to accumulate in a triangular shape, with its apex away from the stell quite to leeward of the most distant part of the wall, and of course leaves the interior free of snow.
