Salivary gland stones. X-ray of part of the mouth and lower jaw of a 36-year-old man with stones (mineral deposits, calculi) in the submandibular gland on his right side. The stones are the irregular white areas at lower left. The formation of a calculus in a salivary gland is known as sialolithiasis. Surgery or shockwave therapy can be used to treat the condition. Also visible (between the stones and the teeth) is the mandibular canal, the space that encloses the inferior alveolar nerve, artery and vein. It is important to avoid damage to the nerve and blood vessels when carrying out dental surgery. For the precise location of the mandibular canal, see image C040/3270.
