The surviving Horatii brother was met by his sister, who cried (as shown here), knowing her brother had killed her fiancee.

According to Roman legend, in the early 600s , the Romans were at war with the neighboring Albans. Rather than incur a greater loss of life, it was decided to have a single combat decide the war's victor. The Horatii triplets volunteered to defend the Roman cause against the Alban Curiatii triplets. The Horatii won: actually two died and the third defeated the three Curiatii. Following the fight, the sole Horatii brother returned home and was met by his sister, who cried (as shown here) because seeing her victorious brother, she knew her fiancee (one of the Curiatii) was dead. Her brother then slew her. He was brought to trial and his father pleaded that if this son were killed, he would have no live children. The court did not give a sentence of death but made him pass beneath the yoke and also gave him other punishments.
