Thegovernment at this time liad troops stationed at a point about nine milesabove Ord, the county seat of Valley county, and it had been decided to erectmore commodious quarters for the soldiers. There was plenty of sand andgravel and work was commenced on the garrison. The walls were constructedof red cedar, of which there was an abundance in the canons not far sawmill was put in operation, and teams were hired to haul the logs andlumber, as well as all other material needed in constructing the fort.
