York, UK, 1 July 2016. The centenary anniversary of the start of the World War 1 Battle of the Somme offensive by the British Army and its allies has been commemorated by artist and sculptor Nic Joly. He has created 141 miniature gold coloured soldiers each holding a metal poppy – one for every day of the Battle - and has placed them at 141 war memorials across the UK. Here one such model has been placed on the War Memorial in York, originally designed – as was the iconic Thiepval Memorial in France - by Sir Edwin Lutyens. Credit: david soulsby/Alamy Live News
