Vitamin L1. Computer model of a molecule of vitamin L1 (anthranilic acid or ortho-aminobenzoic acid, ). The atoms (solid tubes) of this organic molecule are colour-coded: oxygen (red), carbon (yellow), hydrogen (grey) and nitrogen (blue). This chemical was isolated in the 1930s, and was once thought to be essential for the production of milk (lactation). Subsequent studies found that this was not the case, and there are no proven symptoms from dietary deficiencies of this chemical. Small amounts of true vitamins are an essential part of a healthy diet, providing enzyme cofactors for the varied biochemistry of body metabolism.
