USINESS is not founded on pure generosity—not to any great extent. Not many men are in business just for the good of others. The ordinary commercial enterprise is not conducted on the same principles as a benevolent institution. "Self-preservation is na- ture's first law," and this law has as much domination in trade as anywhere. Hence, when some northern growers realized, with a suddenness almost amounting to a shock, that the southern demand for northern chrysanthemums was sharply declining, such growers could not be blamed for writhing and complaining a little, as if rudely thrown down and walked over. They could not be expected to dismiss the subject with a laugh, while a big crop of mums, timed just right for All Saints' day, remained unsold. A Wider View of Life. Yet, though self-preservation is na- ture 's first law, it is far, far from being the only law, in business or elsewhere. It is a fundamental and essential law, but not the highest law. It is first, but not last; it is most observed by savages and the lower animals. The most progressive florists, like other high-class business men, are taking a wider and wider view of life as the world advances. In advertising and in other details, the most approved methods are in- tended less and less for the profit of the individual, and more and more for the benefit of the whole horti- i-ultural f r a t e r - nity.
